It’s the time of the year again to witness the glitz and glamour of the coronation night! Last Sept 30, 2021, one beautiful lady was crowned Miss Universe Philippines. And that dashing woman is Cebuana beauty, Beatrice Luigi Gomez.
And there are nuggets of wisdom from this momentous win. Here are 5 things we can learn from Miss Universe as a remote worker.
Stand to Your Advocacies, Even if You’re the First One
Beatrice Luigi Gomez is the first openly queer winner of Ms Universe. She made headlines as this is the first in the pageant’s history, which is another milestone for acceptance for the LGBTQ+ community.
We all know that the LGBTQ+ are faced with discrimination, especially in the Philippines. In this light, our Miss Universe showed that we can be at the forefront of our advocacies.
The same way in remote working. People might not accept that you can earn a decent living online. People, even our loved ones, might even force us to find a “real office job.” But you can be the first to battle the stigma. And as a remote worker, you can be the first in your family to show that it’s a legitimate way of earning.
Push for Equality
With how the Philippines treats one’s gender, opportunities might not be equal to everyone. Some might be given more compared to others. But our Miss Universe surpassed that blockage.
Yes, there will be challenges. But she managed to rise to the top amidst all. And that’s similar to how we win in our jobs and society.
But in remote working, it’s the great equalizer. Our clients don’t really care about our race, age, and gender identity. It’s all about giving the best output for their needs.
You’ll Never Know Unless You Try
There are many things to stop us from getting what we want. And these are present for Bea with how the Philippines view sexuality. But did she stop? For sure, there were times when she doubted herself. But you’ll never know unless you try.
Bea just tried. In 2015, she was second runner-up in the Miss Mandaue pageant. Last January 2020, she was crowned Binibining Cebu. And now, she won the most coveted Miss Universe Philippines title.
There are many things to stop us from trying remote work. It might be our first time. It might be that we lack the skills. But you’ll never know unless you try.
And if you fail, you can influence the outcome by bettering yourself first. And then, try again.
You Can Balance Work with Passion
Bea is not your typical Filipina. She has a list of hobbies, from adrenaline-inducing activities to sports. She does boxing and MMA. She does scuba diving. And she even was a former volleyball varsity player. She is also a model and fights for worthwhile advocacies.
Likewise, remote working allows you to have more time for the things that matter the most. It might be more time for your family, for your hobbies, or any passion projects that you want to pursue.
Never Give Up
Probably the most awe-inspiring moment was when Bea was during the question and answer portion. She was asked:
“If, during your reign as Miss Universe Philippines, things happen in your life that makes you sad and uninspired, how would you be able to continue inspiring others?”
And this was her answer.
“It is very evident that all of us went through difficulties during this pandemic, but it is also proof that we are able to rise to the occasion.”
“If anything happened to me during my reign, I will not give up and inspire others by rising to the problems that I am encountering and by inspiring them that what you are going through, you will be able to overcome it.”
Well said! There will be hardships in our journey as remote workers. And it’s alright to feel it. But don’t give up! We can all rise to the occasion until we overcome it. And if we do, we can be an inspiration to other people to fight for their dreams as well.
