Working the night shift involves certain lifestyle changes. After all, you’re reversing your entire schedule, which might mess up your sleeping schedule.
Still, there are ways to mitigate the negative effects of the night shift on your body.
One way is to start eating healthy and on time as you would during the daytime.
However, if you’re a remote worker, here are some meal ideas you can prepare if you’re in a rush and can’t decide what to eat or cook for the night shift.
Pinoy Omelette
Eggs are part of the fundamental ingredients for most dishes.
They’re a versatile ingredient that can be ready within just a few minutes.
So, why not make a Pinoy-style omelette? You don’t need a lot of fancy ingredients for this filling dish.
Start by cracking your eggs in a bowl and add salt and pepper to taste. Beat the eggs until they’re yellow and runny.
Chop onions and tomatoes. Heat some oil in a pan and saute onions. After 30 seconds, add tomatoes and continue to saute until the onion softens.
Add the eggs, making sure the bottom is cooked before flipping.
Serve your omelette with warm rice (your choice of white, brown, or red).
Adobo
Of course, adobo is on this list as it’s a quintessential part of Pinoy cuisine.
It can require surprisingly little effort, too, because all you have to do is dump your ingredients (choice of meat, vinegar, garlic, and soy sauce) in a pot and wait for it to cook.
Furthermore, you can store leftover adobo in the fridge and eat it the next day. (Some Filipinos even say adobo tastes better a day old.)
Lumpia
Most of the time, you might only encounter lumpia (or in this case, lumpiang shanghai) during a Filipino birthday celebration.
However, it also makes for a great night-time meal too!
You get to make entire batches of lumpia beforehand, which lessens your prep time the entire week.
Lumpia is also an affordable meal (considering the high prices of groceries nowadays) yet extremely tasty for the Filipino palate and is perfect with rice.
All you need are lumpia wrappers, ground pork, minced onions and carrots, and salt.
Tuna Sandwiches
Another one of the meal ideas you can try if you’re not into rice aer sandwiches.
A healthy yet reasonable idea for a sandwich spread is tuna.
Make sure, however, to use a good quality canned tuna. You can swap the mayonnaise for Greek yogurt if you want to lower the calories.
You can also add other vegetables like red onions and celery for additional flavor and texture.
Salads
Another alternative to rice is salads.
Rinse your greens of choice, whether it’s lettuce, spinach, or even kale (if you can find some in the supermarkets).
Next, add chopped vegetables to your salad, such as carrots, cucumbers, bell peppers, and onions. Mushrooms and celery are good additions too.
Don’t forget to include fruits, like mangoes, apples, and oranges. You can even add raisins!
Drizzle it with your chosen dressing just before eating.
Boiled Eggs
Moving on to midnight snacks, it’s great to have a couple of boiled eggs ready when you’re working the night shift.
Again, eggs are super convenient and contain high protein, amino acids, vitamins, and minerals like Vitamin B-12 and selenium.
Fruits
Of course, fruits are another one of the more wonderful midnight meal ideas.
If you can, freeze some grapes beforehand and enjoy them throughout your shift.
They are high in antioxidants, vitamins, and minerals. Plus, they’re a healthier alternative to processed snacks high in sugar.
However, you should stop eating a couple of hours before your bedtime.
You wouldn’t to interrupt your sleep cycle because you need to go to the bathroom.
Healthy Living
A healthy lifestyle is still achievable even when your daily schedule has been turned “upside down.”
All you need to do is to be consistent with both your sleeping and eating habits.
