The new year signals new beginnings.
For many employees, it can mean starting a new job, whether it be at a different company or even transitioning to a remote job.
However, if you’re a veteran remote worker and thinking of the same thing, ask yourself: is this a smart move when you’re already established in your career?
If you have lingering feelings of unfulfillment, you might only need to fall in love with your remote job again.
Here’s a couple of things you can do.
Evaluate Your Feelings Towards the Job
Before making any rash decisions, determine your feelings about your current situation.
Do you really want to leave your remote job? Or do you just want to escape a “toxic” client or manager?
Knowing about what actually bothers you can help you make better decisions about whether to leave or make it work.
Be Proactive
So, now that you’ve acknowledged the root of your discontent with your remote job, what happens next?
Taking charge is one way to combat these feelings. Make concrete plans to take yourself out of this rut.
For instance, having a routine is good, but too much can be restricting and boring.
Thus, incorporate tiny changes into your day-to-day so there’s a bit of variety.
Maybe, you can interact more with your virtual coworkers you aren’t close with. You can also head down to a local coworking space for a bit of a change in scenery.
Whatever it is you decide to do, don’t just wait around and do nothing.
Speak Out
You may need more opportunities to grow in your role.
If so, let your client or manager know that you’re open to new responsibilities at work.
You can even volunteer to do certain tasks so you can be more hands-on with learning.
Who knows? On top of discovering a new skill, you might find something worthwhile to do and feel more fulfilled.
Celebrate Small Wins
You don’t always have to wait for a huge accomplishment to celebrate.
It can be as simple as completing a report that you’ve worked on the entire week. Or perhaps, nailing a presentation in front of your boss and coworkers.
Whatever it may be, acknowledging small wins can boost your mood, leading you to love your job a little more.
Look for Like-Minded People
You might have heard that it doesn’t matter whether or not you make friends at work.
To some degree, this is true. After all, you’re there primarily to earn money.
However, your relationship with your coworkers and boss can also affect your morale.
Are you getting along with them even though you’re working from home?
It’s fine if you and your coworkers don’t share a lot of common interests. This can be your chance to look for people who do.
You might want to join organizations outside your work and meet new people.
Surrounding yourself with like-minded people can ignite your passion, which you can redirect towards your remote job.
Have a Life Outside of Work
Don’t dedicate all of your time to work.
Find hobbies or other activities that can entertain you. You can also use this as an opportunity to spend time with your friends and family.
How about going to all the places you’ve always wanted to visit before?
Visiting a new location might inspire and give you a fresh perspective on life.
Remember, you are more than your job.
Learn to Take It Easy
It can be hard to see the bright side of things when you’re down.
As the year ends, these feelings are often intensified, making you even more doubtful about your future.
However, as previously mentioned, don’t make any rash decisions. If you’re thinking about leaving your current job, sit on it for about a day or two (or even weeks!) before taking action.
Who knows? You might find reasons—even small ones—that make you fall in love with your remote job again.
