One of the most popular Artificial Intelligence (AI) apps right now is ChatGPT. This artificial intelligence chatbot can generate almost human-like answers to questions you ask.
Want to know some fun things to do this upcoming summer? ChatGPT can give you a short list of things to try.
Do you want to know more about AI? The app can give you a brief yet sufficient explanation of AI.
You can even have philosophical discussions with it, come to think of it.
In fact, it‘s so advanced it can even generate speeches, articles, or emails when asked to.
This last part is what impresses and scares people at the same time. Some see it as a threat not just to jobs like content writing but also to academic integrity. Professors are concerned that ChatGPT’s ability to produce essays can lead to plagiarism among students.
But before we get ahead of ourselves, let’s find out more about ChatGPT.
What is It?
What exactly is ChatGPT? ChatGPT is a natural language processing tool that allows users to have almost human-like conversations with a chatbot. It was first released by Open AI on November 30, 2022.
Since this chatbot is still in its research and feed-collection phase, ChatGPT is currently free for users. That said, on February 1, Open AI released a paid version of this called ChatGPT Plus.
So how do you use chat ChatGPT? First, you have to log in to its site. Once you finish logging in, you can ask the AI any question you can think of.
Though it may seem that it can think from its responses, ChatGPT can’t do that. It merely recognizes patterns from gathered data to generate an answer. That’s also why its responses tend to sound too generic and bland.
In addition, humans aren’t entirely absent from its operations. Its programmers continue to finetune its responses based on user feedback and new guidelines.
Why is It So Popular?
Chatbots are not a new form of technology, and have been around for some time now. They’ve been used for customer service for quite a while, for instance.
So what makes ChatGPT any different?
One primary reason for its popularity is its expansive scope of knowledge. You can ask ChatGPT about anything, and it will have an answer. Few chatbots can claim such a feat.
Another reason for its popularity is how easily accessible it is to ordinary people. Whenever people think of utilizing AI, they think of those highly advanced supercomputers you need expert knowledge to use.
However, that’s not the case with ChatGPT. You don’t need expert coding skills to use it. You just provide a prompt, and it’ll do the rest.
And perhaps the most controversial reason it’s so popular is that it can do, to an extent, human jobs. With the appropriate prompts, ChatGPT can generate articles, blog posts, do virtual assistant jobs, and analyze customer reviews.
The Problems With ChatGPT.
ChatGPT is an impressive tool that showcases just how far AI has come today. However, there are also several ethical issues associated with it as well.
The first and most relevant issue to us workers is how this chatbot could be used to replace people in their jobs.
As mentioned above, ChatGPT can generate almost human-like articles much faster than a human writer. So why bother hiring one when a chatbot does their job supposedly better -and for free?
This ability to instantly generate articles or paragraphs is also why US schools ban students from using this AI. They’re concerned that ChatGPT will be used for cheating and plagiarizing by students.
In addition, this chatbot isn’t completely infallible. Since it gets its information from the internet, and not all information there is accurate, it can still give wrong answers. This could be dangerous, especially if the question asked is medical in nature.
Besides the risk of being wrong, this chatbot is also prone to biases. Remember, AI doesn’t discriminate between unbiased and biased information.
This could lead to instances where the chatbot would give discriminatory answers against women or minorities.
ChatGPT: Friend or Foe?
As we enter the age of automation, ChatGPT is seen as an example of what the future holds with AI. Here is an AI that can respond to various queries and generate articles and essays that seem like they were written by humans.
However, it also comes with issues. Due to its ability to produce human-like content, people are concerned it may supplant humans and that it could be used to cheat and plagiarize. In addition, it can generate erroneous or even biased answers for its users.
So is this new chatbot a new threat to workers?
Fortunately, the answer’s no. Despite how advanced it is, ChatGPT itself answered that it lacks both the creativity and adaptability of humans to fully replace them.
Yes, it can do some of the more mundane tasks. But for the more complex ones, you’ll still need people to do it.
