Previously, we looked at outdated advice you shouldn’t follow when building your career.
So now, let’s look at the complete opposite: what are some timeless career advice you should still follow today? We’re talking about those that have helped workers from various generations in achieving their career goals.
Without further ado, here are a few examples of timeless career advice that still applies today – whether you’re a fresh graduate or an experienced worker.
Cultivate Your Network.
One hard lesson I’ve learned post-grad is that job opportunities don’t just fall from trees. No matter how impressive your credentials are, if you don’t know where to start looking for one, you won’t land one.
And I’m not alone in this. Almost sixty-nine percent (69%) of Filipinos find job hunting difficult, according to a March survey by the Social Weather Station (SWS).
Even before the pandemic, the best way to find job opportunities has always been through hearing about them from others. In other words, establishing a robust network of connections increases your chances of finding and landing jobs.
In fact, it was through a friend that I gained my current online job at Remote Staff. The opportunity was initially offered to her, but since she already had a full-time gig, she recommended me instead.
If you think networking is just meeting people who can help you find jobs, think again. Networking can also help you form new relationships, which, in turn, can help expand your knowledge and skillset in your career and other fields.
Always Remain Curious.
We all know that curiosity killed the cat. But how many of us know that satisfaction brought it back?
Another timeless career advice is that being curious helps you stand out at work. It motivates us to ask good questions during our first days at a new job so that we can do our jobs better.
Curiosity also drives us to seek more knowledge and eventually, to new opportunities we previously thought beyond us.
Sure, we may stumble when we follow our curiosity. We can always try again via a different method next time, however.
So don’t be afraid to learn this new skill or switch to a different job. You’ll never know what’s out there if you don’t go out and look, right?
Play to Your Strengths.
The first step to figuring out how to ascend the career ladder is identifying where you excel and where you need to improve.
Finding and honing your strengths helps boost your self-confidence and work performance. Additionally, being an expert in your field can help set you apart from your peers and differentiate your personal brand.
This can even lead to you being promoted or assigned to specific projects requiring your skill set.
Early to Bed, Early to Rise.
The world waits for no one. If you want to land a job or make a great impression on your supervisor, you must always be on time to seize them.
Punctuality shows professionalism and commitment. It means you’re someone they can rely upon to submit their work on time.
Of course, you can’t just be punctual during your first week. You have to make a conscious effort to do it everyday to make it a habit.
Strive to Be a Teamplayer.
To succeed at any job, you must learn to work well with others, no matter who they are. Nowadays, companies aren’t just looking for candidates with the best credentials and experience. They’re also looking for people who are good team players.
But wait, shouldn’t they be looking for someone capable of doing their tasks with minimal supervision if they’re searching for remote workers? Yes, that’s true.
Yet even in remote work, you still need to collaborate with people to get the job done. So why not foster camaraderie with your remote team? Doing so will help you have an easier time working with them, boosting everyone’s productivity and morale. It’s a win-win for everyone.
The Right Opportunity Will Come in Time.
One timeless career advice my mother often says is: “Kung para sa iyo yung trabaho. Para sa iyo yan.” (“If the job was meant for you, then you’ll get it.”)
Conversely, sometimes, even when we do our best, we still won’t get hired for a job.
Does this mean you should give up and walk away? Not at all.
It just means that we still haven’t found the job for us and should keep searching. And instead of just banking all our hopes on one application, we should send out multiple ones to maximize our chances of landing a job.
One Step at a Time is Better Than Not Taking Any at All.
Finding and maintaining your job is a daunting task. Thus, we often seek guidance and advice to help us navigate this part of our lives.
Sometimes, the advice we get might no longer be applicable today, having been made obsolete by a rapidly changing business environment.
However, some advice never goes out of style. Timeless career advice, like the ones above, can help you build your career during periods of change and uncertainty.
