The new year heralds new beginnings.
For some, this means finding a new job.
If you’re one of many job seekers hoping to kick start your remote working career, here are several tips on how to sound more confident in your online job interviews.
Go In Thinking That the Recruiters Already Like You
Start by thinking that the hiring managers already like you.
They’ve read your resume and know that you fit most of the job’s criteria on paper.
After all, isn’t that why you scored a job interview?
Now, all you need to do is give them a reason to hire you.
Dress Up
Dress the part even if it’s a virtual interview.
It makes you look presentable and will leave a positive impression on your future employers.
Further, dressing up (even if it’s only the upper part of your body) can put you in the right headspace.
Thus, you’re more likely to be more sure of your responses to the interview questions.
Lastly, looking good can boost your confidence.
Use a Downward Inflection When Speaking
Online job interviews are difficult enough.
You and the hiring manager might not see each other face to face, so they won’t see your facial expressions and gestures.
However, there are other ways you can exude confidence—even virtually.
Most people end their sentences with an upward inflection.
While there is nothing wrong with that, people who use a downward inflection tend to sound more confident.
They also come off as authoritative and credible. You want to give the impression that you know what you’re talking about.
As such, be mindful of your inflection and try speaking a little more slowly with a downward inflection instead.
Do Your Research
To help lessen your anxiety about job interviews, think of it as a meeting instead.
Thus, you must do your research about the company.
Most job seekers are too hyperfocused on preparing their responses to the more common job interview questions.
(And nothing’s wrong with that! That’s important too.)
However, they’re often caught off guard when asked questions about the company they’re applying to.
So, do your due diligence.
Learn about the company’s values, goals, products, and/or services.
Lastly, don’t forget to prepare your own questions at the end of the job interview. Doing so shows your interest and enthusiasm for the role and demonstrates you did your research.
Use Affirmative Language
Affirmative language is powerful.
Start your answers with, “Yes…” or that “You’d be happy to…” to show your enthusiasm should you ever get the job.
Use active verbs too as this shows confidence and initiative. Pro tip: you might want to read the job description since it contains all the key phrases you need to ace the interview.
Confidence Takes Lots of Practice
No one is born confident.
As with everything else, it takes practice and lots of positive self-talk to build confidence.
So, during this job-hunting season, take time to sit down and practice (in front of the mirror, perhaps.)
Go through sample interview questions and prep your answers.
Of course, don’t forget to integrate these tips so you’ll sound more confident.
